With increasing numbers of professional organisations using apps, the time has never been better for developers who can give them what they want.
The Airbus Mobile App Survey report 2017 gives the figures behind the optimism – less than a fifth of respondents have no plans to introduce mobile apps, a reduction from a quarter last year, while those planning a trial has grown four-fold since last year’s survey.
But what are these users looking for in an app vendor?
The survey shows that they will buy from someone with proven experience – they also want to see the ability to deliver end-to-end solutions on the latest smart devices. These are the most important criteria in selecting the app provider, cited by nearly 55 percent and over 46 percent of respondents respectively.
A long lifecycle of the solution was another requirement.
Yet, organisations do not seem to care if a vendor has a wide variety of apps. Much more important to them are specialised apps tailored to suit users’ communication needs.
User organisations are understandably big fans of sharing apps. When asked what they are considering, the answers showed a lot of variety - messaging, multimedia messaging, video and picture sharing figured highly.
In fact, there were almost as many responses as there were entries. This shows a great potential for app developers to provide products, but also flags up a fragmented market. As yet, new apps and app ideas have not gained sufficient ground to become all-popular.
User organisations looking for mobile apps should perhaps talk to each other more. Aligning their needs and wishes could ensure that the market for apps would not have to be so overly specialised and fragmented.
Although there may be no ‘killer app’, no clear consensus of what professional users will really go for, the Airbus app survey will track how users’ priorities change and how the market for apps is developing – watch this space.
