Maximizing Connectivity

Get the picture – the Big Picture. For example, for police officers and fire men on the field, it is simply vital that they know what’s going on at all times. Rome-based Intellitronika provides advanced technology solutions for the police, various defense departments, fire departments as well as both civilian and military security.

This small company has a wealth of experience in the implementation of systems and applications for internal security, allowing Intellitronika to provide the most appropriate technological answer in a tight spot. Co-founder Andrea Medico explains that the mission of the company is to provide the best solutions for public safety professionals, while boosting the distribution of real-time information needed to carry out field activities.

“At the same time, we are raising the level of safety of the operating personnel who are often facing adverse conditions,” Medico says.

Get Connected

Intellitronika has come up with a solution called O.D.I.N.O. (Operational Device for Information, Networking and Observation) in order to help its customers tackle these challenges. The solution features e.g. direct access to multiple databases, device recognition, video streaming in near real time, navigation, localization and alarm functions.

“For people on the field, sending an alarm out to Control Room must be made easy. In O.D.I.N.O, the action automatically activates the cameras integrated into the device and the Control Room receives the video stream and audio coming from the device,” Medico explains, adding that it’s also possible to change the video source by choosing the rear view/front view camera integrated into the tablet or connect external cameras (e.g. body cams).

“The icon for sending alarm is present on every screen.” The solution also features “always on-line” capability, granting a higher level of connectivity and the ability to be on the spot in mere seconds in risky situations. It is no wonder, then, that the Italian Carabinieri have taken a liking to O.D.I.N.O, and there are currently over 3,000 devices installed onboard Carabinieri vehicles.

When There’s No Time to Lose

In Medico’s opinion, the do-or-die feature in all of this is the ability to stream video from the very heart of the action. The solution starts a video broadcast streaming mode near real time that can be activated both by the operator and by the Control Room.

“Videostreaming in real-time can be triggered by accessing the gun holster, for instance – and the Control Room can run a database search in less than seven seconds, which is helpful in man-on-the-run scenarios.”

In fact, Medico argues that in this day and age, critical communications are hardly ‘critical’ if you can’t get quick visuals from the field: “You just need to have that degree of connectivity, you need to have access to the big picture.”

Going Up

Andrea Medico sat down with Airbus people in 2016 to showcase O.D.I.N.O. – and both parties agreed that there is nice room for collaboration here. As Intellitronika is still a small player, it is hoping to benefit from the exposure guaranteed by SmarTWISP.

“For us, it’s a huge opportunity and we want to make the most of it. We believe that this business will grow fast and new products are needed in the marketplace.”
